Villain of the Week: Anyone standing between comics readers and a re-launch of Milestone comics. After all the he-said/he-said, I don’t even care who’s fault it is anymore. Just quit yer teasing and get to working out an equitable deal so’s we can get to reading.
Hero: DC Direct for that frickin’ hot Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman statue.
Villain: Whoever didn’t cast Bryce Dallas Howard as Stella Olemaun in the 30 Days of Night movie. Melissa George (Alias, The Amityville Horror) isn’t bad at all, but Howard would’ve been perfect.
Hero: DC Comics and Hachette books for the nifty cross-promotion of Brad Meltzer stuff. Including an excerpt from Meltzer’s new novel in Justice League of America #1 is cool, but I’m especially eager to see excerpts from comics start appearing in the back of novels.
Villain: The Comic Foundry‘s Tim Leong for throwing rocks in his glass house. There’s nothing inherently wrong with using either sex or sensationalism to sell your magazine as long as you’re honest about doing it. If that’s what captures your demographic; good for you. But doing it and then calling your competitor out for doing it too is just silly.
Hero: Marvel Studios for figuring out how to make a bunch of solo superhero movies and then put all the characters together in an Avengers movie. DC, you should be taking notes.

But oddly, Marvel has only made two good movies.

I don’t think Tim called out Wizard for using sex or sensationalism on the cover. He was calling out how similar the 2 consecutive covers were. He goes on to further call out Wizard how similar the questions that accompanied the cover stories were. He was trying to point out that the magazine needed more imagination and originality.
Somewhere, somehow, somebody made this a sexist issue, which wasn’t what I got from all this in the first place.

“Unless you’re a fan of good writing…”
Well, true, but then you’re not really their target demographic, right? I’m not a Wizard reader and I’m not defending it, but I also think it’s pretty cheesy for Comic Foundry to take Wizard so heavily to task for stuff that’s either a) similar to what CF is also doing, or b) just silly (like the similarity in two, consecutive covers and two Q&As about similar subject matter).
If all the Wizard covers for, say, six months had “hot actresses from comics movie sequels that haven’t been released yet,” I might think Tim had a point. But two in a row isn’t a trend, it’s a coincidence.
He certainly did have a point about the Mighty Avengers article, but he belabored it until it became ridiculous and I started questioning his sincerity.
