Small bites

Here are some brief items, or “Small bites,” as we like to call them:

–Yes, the Kirby String Quartet in Victoria, B.C. are named for that Kirby:

Inspired by legendary comic book artist Jack Kirby, whose creations include the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, the quartet aims to display a similar energy.

Hank McCoy would surely approve.

–Joe Tierney is living the dream:

A lifelong Westchester resident is taking his last chance at business success with a comic book and collectibles store that opened in May.

Joe Tierney said he has put everything he’s got into Big Joe’s Last Chance Comics and Collectibles, 10415 Cermak Road in Westchester.

He even sold his Cadillac to pay for a sign.

–And finally, earlier today the mothership pimped Rich Johnston’s Civil Wardrobe. All I can say is, he had me at Hembeck:

Civil Wardrobe

The book reminds me a bit of the 1980s black and white explosion, when parody comics were all the rage, both good (Boris the Bear, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and bad (all the other countless TMNT parodies). This looks like it could fall into the first category.

  1. Rich Johnston Says:

Also: It’s just a one shot. That helps condense the quality - not saving anything for subsequent issues!

Although if I goes down well, I have to put a ‘53′ together…

  2. No Big Thing Says:

Hardly the first time Kirby and music (particularly avant-tinged jazz) have intersected:

A great record and (obviously) some great album art.
