Wizard World Chicago wasn’t the only big convention over the weekend. There was also Otakon, the annual anime, manga and J-pop gathering in Baltimore, where Tokyopop announced it will begin selling some of its titles exclusively through its website.
The publisher is launching the online-exclusive initiative with Atomic King Daidogan, One, starting with Vol. 10, and Neck and Neck, starting with Vol. 6, and will add Rure in March 2007.
Although the announcement on the Tokyopop website is dated July 18, this weekend seems to be the first time the move to online sales was publicized.
Johanna Draper Carlson at Comics Worth Reading (where I found the link) wonders what instigated Tokyopop’s decision — low sales, or a desire to keep a larger cut of the cover price?
