perhaps of interest in that context: depicting swastikas outside of a scholarly context is illegal in Germany.
This has affected Blade of the Immortal, some Darkness, Spawn and Witchblade stuff. Some examples can be found here:

I don’t know whether there are similar laws elsewhere. Regardless, it may be simply economics that motivates the ban on swastikas.

Does anyone know DC’s policy regarding swastikas on covers? It look like they may leave one off of the Showcase Unknown Soldier book (http://www.dccomics.com/graphic_novels/?gn=6134) from the source (http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=27064&zoom=2).

Not that I mind! Just curious…

I remember back in ’93, after David Wohl left Marvel for Top Cow, he told a story that a Red Skull trading card where he’s holding a Nazi flag was nixed because someone at the company complained that he didn’t want to explain to his kid what that meant.

It’d explain those attempts to get all culturally relevant in the final pages of each issue, that’s for sure. Those things make Donna Troy’s History of the DCU look good.
