After more than two months, the dust has settled on the lesbian Batwoman story. People are still covering it, though.
Today it’s the Bay Area Reporter, the San Francisco gay weekly, which takes a look at 52 Week 11 and discovers comic books have changed.
“52 is nothing like the comics we remember from our childhoods,” David Alexander Nahmod writes. “It’s surprisingly violent, and sexy. Kane and Montoya are hot, as is a briefly seen Intergang villain who is also a lesbian, lusting after Montoya.
“There is no talk of gay rights or women’s rights in 52. The lesbianism of these characters is presented as a matter of fact, and accepted unconditionally by the other characters, including Montoya’s male friend Charlie.”

First I’ve heard of Whisper A’Daire being a lesbian. I just assumed that she was a bisexual predator because, you know, when you’re an immortal, you get bored and willing to experiment.

Well, David Alexander Nahmod probably has read very few current comics other than 52, (evidenced by referring to The Question as “Charlie,” which no one reading this blog would do) so if all he has to go on is issue #11, then yeah, he’d be right to assume she’s just gay.

It’s a shame to see so much being made of Batwoman when two teenage homosexual males in Young Avengers have had their sexuality accepted by not only their friends, but their parents as well, and they don’t get nearly the press.

Not to mention Kathy Kane has completely overshadowed the new queerish Phantom Lady…

For Steven:
I reviewed 52 for Bay Area Reporter in SF CA as an assignment.
I’m very familiar with DC comics of the 50s and 60s, but not with what’s current.
I was not trying to be a comics expert, merely letting our gay readership know about the new Batwoman & my impressions of her.
I’m glad to hear about gay characters in New Avengers.
I suspect Batwoman got so much press because the Superman/Batman families are such huge, worldwide franchise.
