The state of the graphic novel in a ‘Golden Age’

CBSNews.com posts a sizable and upbeat overview of the graphic novel market that features quotes from a lot of the right people — a Diamond representative, fans, a retailer, Chris Ware, Joe Quesada, Neil Gaiman, Terry Moore — but still manages not to say anything.

I guess I was looking for more of a hook than, “It’s a swell time for graphic novels,” even if the piece is of the Comics 101 variety. Maybe the problem is with the scope, or lack of focus.

Still, there are a couple of interesting quotes, including this one from Quesada about writers from other industries flocking to comics:

“Today we have creators from the ocean diving into the pond. It is truly a creative Golden Age … And now the tide has turned as creators who got there start in the small pond that was comics are being courted by Hollywood and succeeding in that ocean.”

And this one, from Gaiman, succinctly defining a graphic novel as a “fat comic that can be sold as a book in a bookstore.”
