This week Marvel and DC both offer up new takes on old characters, as the first issues The Creeper and Agents of Atlas come out on Wednesday. They’ll be joined by the second issue of the new Atom series, which had an intriguing beginning last month, and the latest Civil War crossover, Fantastic Four #539, where we’ll learn where The Thing’s allegiances really are.
Also dropping this week are the first issue of Wormwood, Kyle Baker’s Nat Turner collection, the latest issue of the big indy hit Mouse Guard and the Absolute Kingdom Come collection.
Now on to the picks of the week …
Tom Bondurant’s Pick of the Week:
Not much on my plate this week, so I’m going with Spider-Man Visionaries: Kurt Busiek Vol. 1. It reprints the start of Busiek’s short-lived, well-received Untold Tales Of Spider-Man series, a retro experiment from the ’90s set against Spidey’s early adventures. Between it and the all-ages Marvel Adventures: Spider-Man #18, also shipping this week, fans who want a simpler status quo have a couple of options.
JK Parkin’s Pick of the Week
As a kid, whenever I went to the doctor for a shot, my mom would let me buy comics at the drug store next to the doctor’s office. That’s where I bought What If? #9, “What if the Avengers fought evil in the 1950s?” If it wasn’t for the framing sequence that showed the real Avengers hanging with The Watcher, I think that issue would have left me very confused. What it did do was provide a glimpse at a quirky-but-fun group of characters that Jeff Parker and Leonard Kirk have now updated and turned into what looks like a very cool comic. They and Marvel have done a fantastic job of building buzz, between their own websites and the contest/blog on the Marvel site. And this time around, I get to read the adventures of Marvel Boy, Venus and the rest without having a needle stuck in my ass … so that’s a plus right out of the gate.

Lucas Siegel’s Pick of the Week
Y: The Last Man #48, when I’m done reading this book, it will mean I only have one year’s worth of Y stories left. This is very bittersweet to me. I’m excited to finally find out who caused the plague, get some answers and some closure to the story of Ampersand and his pet human Yorick, but damn will I be sad to see it go. Luckily, I’ve got a baker’s dozen worth of issues left, and every one of them will be top of the stack for me, as it has been month in and month out since I discovered it a few years ago.

Nice choice, Lucas. One of favorites as well.

Really looking forward to Detective Comics #822. Paul Dini’s first issue was superb - probably the best issue of Detective I’ve read in a long while. Also, JH Williams art has never been better.

Byrne is a giant idiot, but Simone’s writing is so good that Atom #2 is the book for me!

Are you saying I stole the idea for this feature from you? Because I’m looking at your blog right now, and I’m not seeing anything similar.
If you’re talking about the name, I started doing “Can’t Wait for Wednesday” back when we were The Great Curve. The first one came out the first week of January, a whole month before your site was even launched, based on your archives.
So nope, I’ve never heard of you guys, and I certainly didn’t swipe anything from you. Thanks for playing.
