Can't Wait For Wednesday!

Well, Diamond’s shipping lists are currently down, but the show must go on … so let’s take a look at what Midtown Comics has listed as coming out this week …

Last month saw quite possibly the coolest Daredevil issue in who-knows-how-many years, as a prison riot/hit attempt made strange bedfellows of Matt Murdock, the Kingpin, Bullseye and even the Punisher. This week brings us not only the fallout from the riot, but also the big reveal of who the fake Daredevil is.

And if that’s not enough to get you excited about masked orphaned vigilantes, Grant Morrison’s Batman run also starts this week. At Sunday’s “big three” panel in San Diego, Morrison said, “We all love Batman, but he got kind of uptight.” It should be fun to see Morrison’s kinder, gentler (and apparently black humored) version of Batman.

On the first issue front, keep your eye out for Jack of Fables, Castle Waiting, Image’s Revved, IDW’s Road to Hell (which wins the prize for most disturbing cover), Young Avengers/Runaways, She-Dragon, Xena and the Astro City Samaritan Special. If you’re looking for something off the beaten path, a new Bumper Boy book also lands this week.

Let’s check in with the Blog@ crew on their picks …

Chris Hunter’s Pick Of The Week

Wolverine #44 – After the events of last issue, I have to see what will become of Logan and Nitro. I’m really enjoying the storyline more than I thought that I would and Guggenheim writes a down-and-dirty Wolverine that I really like. This will be at the top of the stack on Wednesday.

Kevin Melrose’s Pick of the Week:

Castle Waiting Vol. II #1. I’m a late convert to Linda Medley’s warm and quirky fantasy series. Although I’d heard great things about the series, published sporadically since 1996, it wasn’t until Fantagraphics released the beautiful hardcover collected edition that I actually read the comic. And when I did, I fell head-over-heels in love with the characters, the story and Medley’s storytelling. Really, I can’t say enough about her work. Now Medley returns to the fairy-tale world of Castle Waiting with a new series that picks up where the collection left off. What’s more, issue 1 is 64 pages, with a gorgeous wraparound cover.

Tom Bondurant’s Pick of the Week:

Batman #655, the start of what I hope is a long and mind-blowing Grant Morrison run. Not only has Batman regained his sense of black humor, apparently it’s Morrison’s sense of humor too. That alone is worth the $2.99. I am a little disappointed in the news coming out of Comic-Con, though — a hundred thousand people, and nobody thought to lobby Morrison about Bat-Mite?

Graeme McMillan’s Pick of the Week:

My somewhat unexpected pick of the week: Daredevil #87. Never mind that Brubaker and Lark have been slowly building a tense prison drama filled with unexpected guest-stars (Yeah, like *you* expected to see the Punisher get himself arrested just to visit Matt Murdock), this issue gets my pick because we’re finally going to find out just who the mysterious fill-in Daredevil is. I’m a sucker for mystery stories, what can I say…?

JK Parkin’s Pick of the Week:

I’m a big fan of Fables, so Jack of Fables #1 has me psyched to see what everyone’s favorite Fables bad boy has been up to since we last saw him hanging out in Hollywood.

So what did we miss? What book are you looking forward to? Leave us a comment to let us know.
