Reuters is reporting that the second Pirates of the Caribbean movie, which opened Friday, has displaced Spider-Man for the highest opening weekend in box office history.
Pirates plundered the U.S. box office for $132 million, leaving Spider-Man‘s $115 million in its wake. At least Spider-Man had a good run; it set its record back in 2002.
In addition, Pirates took in $55.5 million on Friday, beating out the record held by Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, which earned $50 million on opening day back in May 2005.

Take these numbers with a grain of salt. Pirates 2 opened on more screens than either Spiderman or Episode 3, in fact only Spiderman 2 opened on more screens. So the per-screen average of Pirates 2 was lower than Episode 3. To me the per-screen is a much better indication of success of a film than total gross on an opening weekend.

It’s also going to break the record for laqrgest drop when the world realizes how disappointingly awful the movie was. Is there a record for most requests for money back?

ummmm, well, since it was killer (and everyone in the ginat theatre i saw it in seemed to think so) it’s doubtful. I predict this flick has some legs…

It also opened on a holiday weekend. I thought it was amazing, and I’d sooner ask for my money back on X-Men or Superman (or both). Pirates is how blockbuster movies ared supposed to be done.

This was not a holiday weekend. Still pretty good, then.
