Scurvy dogs, cutthroats and pop-culture icons

Jumping on the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest bandwagon, Newsday feeds my list obsession with its breakdown of the “Top 10 Pop-Culture Pirates.”

The Dragon Lady from Terry and the Pirates is the only comics character to get the nod.

Still, it’s an interesting mix of the expected (Captain Hook from Peter Pan) and the unexpected (Patchy and Painty from SpongeBob SquarePants).

10. Patchy and Painty (SpongeBob SquarePants)

9. Jean LaFoote (Cap’n Crunch commercials)

8. Blackbeard and Jean Lafitte (historical pirates)

7. The Crimson Pirate

6. The Dragon Lady (Terry and the Pirates)

5. Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean)

4. The Black Pirate

3. Errol Flynn

2. Captain Hook (Peter Pan)

1. Long John Silver (Treasure Island)

Explanations for each entry are at the link.
