At 65, Wonder Woman’s still going strong

Is Wonder Woman 65 years old, or 64? All Star Comics #8, in which she debuted, had a cover date of December 1941-January 1942. So, some sources give 1941 as her first appearance, while others say 1942.

But what difference is a month, or a year, at this point?

As far as Jerome Maida of the Philadelphia Daily News is concerned, the Amazing Amazon is 65, and holding up pretty well — even if he does use the X-Men’s Rogue as a gauge by which to measure her success.

“This is quite a feat in an industry and marketplace that is tough on titles headlined by female characters,” Maida writes. “For example, the popular X-Men‘s character Rogue lasted only 12 issues as a solo title.”

Writer Jimmy Palmiotti will have none of that: “It’s a joke to compare the two. Wonder Woman’s roots are in mythology, instantly giving the character more scope and background than a character like Rogue.”

Maida also checks in with current Wonder Woman Allan Heinberg, who addresses the issue of the character’s revealing costume.

“I feel that the fact that Wonder Woman is so comfortable in her own skin, is so accepting of her femininity and sexuality, and is brave enough to wear a costume like that out in a world of men … is an act of courage and bravery and self-acceptance to some degree,” Heinberg says. “As a fan of the character and a comic-book writer, I would never want to change the costume.”
