Wood on Metal

June 23rd, 2006
Author Stephanie Chan

Illustrator Ashley Wood was the guest on session 022 of The Kojima Productions Report Podcast. Wood was discussing his work on Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel, Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty comic series by IDW Publishing, and the upcoming Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops.

The Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel, which was released earlier this week, is the first interactive digital comic made for the Sony PSP, based on the Metal Gear Solid comic series by IDW Publishing (that’s right, it’s a digital graphic novel based on a comic book series based on a video game). I have been waiting for this UMD with bated breath, and it should arrive on time for my birthday. For a closer look, check out the official website.

It’s one of the few things that the PSP is good for. Unfortunately, I can’t afford to pay $200 for a portable that I’d only use for one graphic novel and two games that I’m interested in. :-/

I picked it up last week. There some interesting play with formal comics elements, multi-tiered speech ballons appear one bubble at a time, sound effects for gunfire appear along with actual sound effects. The pacing could use some tweaking, to borrow a term from video games it feels “on-rails”. There’s also a bit of replay value (or maybe re-read value) with a game mode that lets you zoom through the artwork. It’s good for a first outing, I don’t expect the format to light the world on fire or anything, but if you have a PSP and love comics it’s kind of a no-brainer. It’s certainly made me a fan of Ashley Wood.

  4. Blog@Newsarama » Comic books for the Nintendo DS Says:

[...] I know ever since they started making comic books for the PSP, our own Stephanie Chan has been asking when they’d have them for the Nintendo DS. Today’s your lucky day, Steph: Comic Book DS, a nifty little homebrew application, allows users to view comics or pictures on their DS. We haven’t given it a whirl yet, but you can check out some impressions from 4cr here. Eric over at 4cr also gives a step-by-step rundown on how you can get your comics onto the DS, as well as navigating them through the application. [...]
