Sour Grapes of the day.

June 23rd, 2006
Author Graeme McMillan

From John Byrne’s interview about the All New Atom series at The Pulse, in response to the question “You’ve worked with Gail Simone before on the Man of Steel, how is this assignment different?”:

“Well, I have a good inker this time. Fans will actually get to see what I drew without having to check the pencils scans on my website.”

Okay, I gotta know. Who inked him on Action?

  2. Graeme McMillan Says:

Nelson - Check out a comparison of Byrne’s page here:

  3. Tom Foss Says:

Hmm…maybe if John Byrne’s pencils weren’t so sloppy, if his characters retained any sense of anatomy, if everyone’s faces didn’t seem to be melting, he wouldn’t have needed an inker to redraw the work. The man’s skill has slipped markedly since his heyday, but he thinks he’s better than ever. Time for Mr. Byrne to pull his head out of his arse and put some effort back into his work, or retire.

  4. Kevin Sole Says:

I’m gonna go with ‘retire’ on that one.

  5. David Blackshore Says:

Nelson did wonders for Dan Jurgens in that Infinite Crisis Secret Files thing. I didn’t read the Simone/Byrne Action Comics run, but I bet he did the same thing for Byrne’s pencils. DC should give him more assignments.

  6. Lucas Says:

OK, so he’s mad that the inker/colorist made Lois Lane look like a person?! Look at that second panel’s pencils! EEK! Sorry, I’m not usually this critical but come on!

  7. Tuckenie (Chris Tucker) Says:

I’m no Byrne fan and some of that work Graham posted looked awful-I mean Lois Lane’s face shouldn’t look like it went through a printing press-but I have to agree with Byrne in that his work on the comic WAS changed too much by the inker. LITG posted some examples in which the scenes looked completely different. At some point you take the man off the book if you don’t like his work. Why should he work harder if all they’re going to do is change his stuff? Course he’s also a jerk so that could be part of it too…

  8. Juisarian Says:

Instead of “Sour Grape of the Day” some blog needs a “Stupid Byrne Statement of the Day” department. Say what you like about his artistic abilities, that man is a walking, (mostly) talking comedy goldmine. Keep it up Mr B, I’m loving it!

  9. Rob Staeger Says:

I’m afraid I don’t see any major difference between the two. I don’t see a huge need to change Byrne’s pencils, but I don’t see much evidence that Nelson did, either.

  10. markus Says:

the LITG column in question, with examples.

  11. IttoDaigoro Says:

Maybe if he spent less time online making asinine comments and insulting people who disagree with him, he’d have more time and energy to put into his work??

The female character in the first (pencilled) panel looks like the frickin’ Joker. Byrne should be grateful to the inker and colorist.

  13. Adam Cain Says:

Whether it fits your personal taste or not is irrelevant IMO. I bought Action for Byrne’s pencils, not Nelson’s.

  14. Rob Staeger Says:

Thaks, markus — a few of those examples make the difference a lot clearer.

  15. Chris Hunter Says:

Many of those panels were quite clearly redrawn, but for the better in almost every case.
