Forward Thinking: Marvel Comics in September 2006

June 22nd, 2006
Author Tom Bondurant

Ah, fall!  The leaves start to change, the school year is young, the epic miniseries start winding down….  That’s right, Marvel Comics has released its solicitations for September, and Chris Hunter and I are looking at all the pretty colors.

BLADE #1

CH: Never been a fan of Hawkman or Hawkgirl, so seeing Chaykin coming to do some Marvel work, especially on Blade, is a must get for me. Guggenheim has done good so far on Wolverine, so I’m thinking that this is going to be a great pairing of creators.
TB: I almost wish Chaykin were writing this too, but I agree – this should be a fun book.

ETERNALS #4

CH: Issue one was a really good start. Much better than what I remember from 1602 #1, which is absolutely nothing. A completely forgettable series. I could go on and on…
TB: In the end I had the same reaction to 1602, which is why I wasn’t too keen on this series, even with Gaiman. Now, hearing better things about Eternals, I might have to pick up #1.

IRON MAN #12

CH: I have to say that I’ve been impressed with the creative team after Ellis and Granov. Knauf and Zircher have delivered an intriguing story with “Execute Program”. It’s been entertaining and suspenseful and has been more than what I expected.
TB: That’s a nice cover, too.

1602: FANTASTICK FOUR #1

CH: See above comments about Eternals #4. I still can’t believe that Marvel is doing a sequel to 1602….
TB: Don’t you mean another sequel to 1602? With Peter David writing, it should be at least worth a look.

NEXTWAVE: AGENTS OF H.A.T.E. #8

CH: Ellis. Immonen. Bromo-Fizz. Heroes running a marathon. ‘Nuff said.
TB: I was a little worried to see Nextwave off the schedule last month (right?), so glad it’s back. Kick! ‘Splode!

STAN LEE MEETS SPIDER-MAN

CH: This will get a glance from me at the shelf. I like the more recent work of Coipel, so I just may get this issue. Lee’s writing does leave much to be desired, but I’ve always been an art fan over writing, so….
TB: I’m the other way, and it’s Joss Whedon writing, so I may have to get this one.

STAN LEE MEETS DR. STRANGE

CH: Alan Davis can do no wrong. Bought.
TB: Agreed – but Stan as Eternity is rather disturbing.

UNION JACK #1

CH: Why, Marvel? Why?
TB: Christos Gage did do a decent Legends of the Dark Knight arc a few months ago. I expect this will be more of the same. Like you, though, I’m not sure why Union Jack needs redefining for the 21st Century.

WOLVERINE #46

CH: Two words: Damage Control!
TB: Cool, but I hope they’re not grim and grittyfied.

HEROES FOR HIRE #2

CH: Is it just me or does this series just reek of desperation?
TB: See also Claws.

NEW AVENGERS #24

CH: Granov. And it’s really time to see what the Marvel Universe’s most powerful character is going to do concerning the events of Civil War.
TB: You mean Thor? Oh, wait, too soon.

CHRIS’S ROUNDUP

MOON KNIGHT #6: After reading issues one and two of this series, I’ve come to the realization that David Finch has a lot of fans, because his art is the only thing carrying this series. And to think that Marvel is letting Huston write the Ultimates Annual….

PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL #1: My question is this – does Fraction have what it takes to handle this character or to handle a title for Marvel period. Reviews I’ve read of his other work haven’t been too praising, but to be honest, I’m willing to give him a chance simply because of Rex Mantooth.

SQUADRON SUPREME #7: Considering what has been going on in this series, it’s nice to see the tables turned against the Squad. An intriguing series so far….

ASTONISHING X-MEN #17: Loving this storyline. A dainty Wolverine? A beastly Beast? Colossus downed with one hit? A very interesting Hellfire Club, indeed…

EXILES #86: I have to get this storyline just to see how the Exiles deal with a million different Wolverines…

WOLVERINE: ORIGINS #6: I’m really enjoying this series so far and we haven’t even had the fight between Captain America and Wolverine yet. Way and Dillon are quite the team, but I’m hoping that Way isn’t going to drag out what exactly The Plan is too long…

X-MEN: PHOENIX – WARSONG #1: Again, I ask, why? And Kirkham is supposed to be a Marvel “hot artist”? I don’t think so.

ZOMBIE #1: I like Hotz. I like zombies. I’ll be checking this out. Is DC afraid of zombies, I wonder…?

TOM’S ROUNDUP

CAPTAIN AMERICA #22: Can’t wait to see Brubaker’s take on Civil War. For my wallet’s sake, I’m hoping this will be a self-contained tie-in.

MARVEL ADVENTURES SPIDER-MAN #19: Peter David writes Spidey vs. Fin Fang Foom? Somebody at Marvel likes me.

MARVEL MASTERWORKS: THE HUMAN TORCH VOL. 1: This does look like a good set of stories, even without the oddity of Jerry Siegel working on a Marvel character.

SPIDER-GIRL PRESENTS FANTASTIC FIVE: IN SEARCH OF DOOM DIGEST: In fact, I think I have all five issues of Fantastic Five, taking up not a lot of space next to the DeFalco/Ryan Fantastic Fours. They’re not bad, but they take off from the DeFalco/Ryan run.

FANTASTIC FOUR: THE LIFE FANTASTIC TPB: The “Doom’s Birthday” special was pretty good, but the Death In The Family special was very disappointing and the regular FF issues really only set up “Planet Hulk.” For some reason I never did get the FF Wedding Special, so if it turns out to be prohibitively expensive in the back-issue bins, I might get this collection.

THOR: THE ETERNALS SAGA VOL. 1 TPB: An all-star artist roster, including Walt Simonson before he took over the title — but how’s the story?
