Back in the late 1980s, George R. R. Martin introduced the world of the Wild Cards, an Earth that was infected by an alien virus and turned many citizens into either “Jokers” (freaks) or “Aces” (super heroes). This wasn’t a comic (though adaptations were released by Marvel’s Epic imprint), but a series of novels by Martin, Melinda M. Snodgrass, Chris Claremont and others.
SciFi Wire reports that Martin is planning a return to the Wild Cards universe, as Tor will publish a new hardcover in 2007:
Many of the original series’ writers will return for the new one, and Martin has also brought on new writers. “[These new writers] brought some great characters and concepts to us, and I think they’ll be great additions to the Wild Cards crew,” he said.
Martin said that he never abandoned Wild Cards, though he has most recently been writing his popular fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire. “I’ve always juggled,” he said. “As a writer you don’t just do one thing. For 10 years I was [in Hollywood] working on Twilight Zone and Beauty and the Beast, and I’d write and edit Wild Cards on the weekend. You just find time to do it.”

Yaaay! Wild Cards is the best. I hope that this new book addresses some of the dangling plot threads from the first couple of series… like, did Zoe really try to kill all those people? Did the Turtle ever get a new shell? Is Tachyon ever coming back to Earth (after all, he still owes Jube a favour…)? What was the deal with that glass statue Croyd was talking to way back in book V? Is Mark Meadows still the Radical (God, I hope not)? Where is Mod Man, and did Patchwork survive book XI? Did Belew survive book XV?
I must know.

There’s more information on this new series at Martin’s website (www.georgerrmartin.com), including a list of writers who’ll be participating. Unfortunately, Victor Milan is not among those mentioned…
