She wished upon a … well, you know.

The Idaho Statesman reported Saturday (and the story was picked up by the AP today) about 6-year-old Aubrey Matthews of Boise, whose wish for superpowers was granted by the Idaho Make-A-Wish foundation. Aubrey has an inoperable brain tumor.

On Friday, as the superheroine “Star,” Aubrey enjoyed X-ray vision, super strength, superspeed, and super-breath. She also got to wear her own blue-and-silver costume (relentlessly cute photo at the Statesman link) and, among other super-adventures, thwarted her arch-nemesis, “Black” (named for the shadowy figure on Neighborhood Watch signs).

Aubrey’s exploits were facilitated by many volunteers and filmed by a local camera crew. She even had her own Justice League: Lion Lady, Frog Lady, Dog Man, House Lifter, Sky Girl, Martian Manhunter (yes, really), and Tree Girl, all clad in costumes of Aubrey’s design. A local artist is drawing a commemorative comic book, and Aubrey was congratulated by Boise’s mayor and Adam West.

A second round of chemotherapy has shrunk the tumor somewhat, and Aubrey’s health has been better than expected. We wish her a long and happy crimefighting career.
