Young Avengers wins GLAAD award

June 16th, 2006
Author Kevin Melrose

Well, this slipped past the radar: Last weekend, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation honored Marvel’s Young Avengers with the organization’s Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book.

Other nominees were Gotham Central (DC Comics), Strangers in Paradise (Abstract Studio), Top Ten: The Forty Niners (ABC/Wildstorm) and Y: The Last Man (DC Comics/Vertigo).

The Media Awards recognize creators and projects in mainstream media “for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives.”

Young Avengers, by Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung, features teen heroes/boyfriends Wiccan and Hulkling.

It’s a great book. Hey, Wiccan and Hulking are cool but make mine Patriot! It’s great to see a strong, intelligent African American male character. I do wish that Heinberg hadn’t given depicted him with the syringe, injecting himself with a drug. Heinberg may not realize it, but that was a terribly stereotypic image: black guy who’s a “drug” addict.

Yes, but that “strong, intelligent African American male character” was able to face his problem and seek help IIRC. So if anything, Heinberg provided a well-rounded character with failings, rather than a sterotype.

[...] Happy Father’s Day to new father Robert Kirkman! Also congrats to Marvel and the Young Avengers team for their recent GLAAD award. [...]

Congrats to YA for the GLAAD award.

Also; Allan has stated that Patriot’s steroid use is based on his own history with steroids. There’s nothing racist or sterotypical about it.
