Abadazad, and the future of children’s literature

June 15th, 2006
Author Kevin Melrose

Scripps Howard News Service looks at recent moves by comic books into the children’s literature market, focusing on Disney‘s acquisition and recent release of Abadazad, by J.M. DeMatteis and Mike Ploog.

The first two volumes in the series, The Road to Inconceivable and The Dream Thief, are hybrids, blending prose with comics.

Calvin Reid of Publishers Weekly says we’ll see more books like Abadazad in coming years.

“We live in a hyper-visual culture. It makes sense that visual storytelling will only continue to grow in popularity,” he tells Scripps Howard. “Publishers … are realizing that comics appeal to kids, they encourage reading and comics can be geared to any level of reading sophistication and literacy.”
