Has it really been five days since the last “lesbian Batwoman” story? My, how time flies.
This morning, the Morris County, N.J., Daily Record chimes in and, thanks to the magic of Wikipedia, concludes that Kate Kane isn’t the first homosexual supehero.
Northstar and Pied Piper? Both gay, columnist Matt Manochio uncovers. Plus, a local informant tells him, so is Ultimate Colossus who, in “an alternate universe,” is dating Northstar, “even though (Colossus) is a straight character in the normal universe.”
And folks say daytime soaps are complicated …
But the best (only?) revelation comes from media-savvy comics fan Adam McGovern, who has his own theory about all the mainstream attention being heaped upon Batwoman:
“It mostly proves the superpowers of DC Comics’ marketing team. If you stopped people on the street, 10 out of 10 could tell you that Batwoman’s gay, though maybe one out of 10 could tell you who Batwoman is.”
Meanwhile, via Crocodile Caucus, comes word that Examiner.com columnist Ken Garcia is shocked — shocked, I tell you! — to discover the existence of gay comic-book fans: “It appears that superheroes that are unbelievably good-looking and lead double lives have taken on cult status in the gay community. Long before Brokeback Mountain appeared on the horizon, it appears that there were questions about the private lives of planet-hopping individuals. People with magical powers who somehow got pushed out of the mainstream of society apparently hold great appeal to gays.”
Yes, so it appears.
Note: As Joe Palmer points out in the comments, Gay League has an invaluable, up-to-date list of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender comic book characters.

All that fuss about gay characters…gollygolly, shocking.
I’m having a gay ole time reading comics for some 25 years already.
