The issue hits the shelves today, so I guess it’s finally okay to talk about the big reveal in Civil War #2. In fact, why not let the New York Post do it (Massive spoilers. You have been warned)? Alternatively, Brian Michael Bendis says that you could have been spoiled if listening to Howard Stern.
Mark Millar points the finger after the jump, so those that want to stay unspoiled can do so.
“I had a million big surprises already planned for MCW. There’s scenes coming up and twists on characters that will blow you away, I promise, but this one was entirely Joe Q. The idea worked well with the concept and, to be honest, I’d have had him on the other side, but the rationale they had was a good one and so I came up with the TV camera way of doing it. But the blame for this one lies with Joe essentially.”
Shall we wait for the internet to break in half now?

This is the first time I’ve blown through a spoiler warning, and actually felt spoiled.
Marvel has a knack for pulling stunts like this, then pretending it never happens *cough*cough*Morrison’s run on X-Men*cough*.
I have to admit, I didn’t see this one coming. Who wants to start taking bets on how it’ll be reversed? I’m giving 4:1 odds on it involving Franklin Richards.
June 14th, 2006 at 11:35 am
Dude! I put “Spoilers” in the headline and said that the link had massive spoilers in the the post! I did that for a reason, you know, and not just because we’re nervous about upsetting Marvel.
That said: Yes, this is something that I’m already counting down until it gets reversed (like the last time Iron Man revealed his identity – “I’m actually Tony Stark. No, wait, I’m not. Look! Over there! A bunny!” *runs away*). Not because it’s a change in the status quo, but because it’s a needless change in the status quo that completes Marvel’s recent stripping-away-of-all-things-Spider-Man about Spider-Man.

I’m not blaming you! I’m just saying it’s the first “spoler warning” I’ve ever come across that was worthy of the term. (I have to work on the computer all day, I won’t get my comics until tommorrow, and I listen to Stern on my way home. I figured I’d just get it over with quick, like pulling off a band-aid
June 14th, 2006 at 11:47 am
Nah, I didn’t really think you were blaming me. I was just establishing plausable deniability, all the same.

I don’t get it. Didn’t the last issue of Amazing Spider-Man make it EXTREMELY clear that that’s exactly what he was going to do?
I’m disappointed. I was hoping Mary Jane would buy it.

“I don’t get it. Didn’t the last issue of Amazing Spider-Man make it EXTREMELY clear that that’s exactly what he was going to do?”
Not reading ASM, I wouldn’t know. Last I saw, he was still trying to come to a decision in the horrifically offensive Front Line #1 story.
“I’m disappointed. I was hoping Mary Jane would buy it.”
There’s still another five issues. Will she be the Conner Kent of Civil War? Start placing your bets.

OMIGOD. The internet…it’s breaking in half! Omigod, no! NOOOOOOOO—
PS: Somewhere, David Michelinie is weeping.
June 14th, 2006 at 12:10 pm
Yes, but to be fair, that’s got nothing to do with Civil War. He’s just a cryer.
June 14th, 2006 at 12:11 pm
Actually, I was referring to David Michelinie’s desire to do a similar plot during his run on the character that’s in that spoiler. Tom DeFalco shot it down every year.

[...] As fanboys begin to foam at the mouth, immediate blame will be placed on Mark Millar, the author of the issue, but Millar claims it wasn’t his idea: “I had a million big surprises already planned for MCW. There’s scenes coming up and twists on characters that will blow you away, I promise, but this one was entirely Joe Q. The idea worked well with the concept and, to be honest, I’d have had him on the other side, but the rationale they had was a good one and so I came up with the TV camera way of doing it. Okay… NOW I want to write Spider Man stories.
This is going to open up a whole new world of ideas.

Marvel Team-Up Starring Spider-Man and Ursa Minors?

I love it!

Neil, it may open a whole new world of ideas, but are they good ideas?
Let me be the first (maybe) to predict, the secret identity status quo will be restored with clones. Clones I tell you. Look, a bunny clone. The bunny line was damn funny, Graeme.
With great power comes great responsibility. And yet, clearly not great intelligence. The number of challenges to reveal his identity Parker has faced in his life in the past, and he gives up the secret identity for this? Yeesh.
June 15th, 2006 at 12:37 am
We’re only on the 2nd issue, folks, so a LOT can still happen.
As for how they can reverse the reveal? Let’s see… magic (doc strange; scarlet witch), time travel, the Watcher (really, he’s a buttinsky)… it’s really much ado about nothing.

[...] Although Marvel has dubbed the big revelation in Civil War #2 as “arguably the most shocking event in comic book history,” the mainstream media are a little slow to seize upon the story. MarvelWhile it did receive prominent placement on Yahoo and a mention by Howard Stern, a Google News search brings up just 28 items, most of which are variations of the same newswire articles. [...]

[...] The week’s biggest story, though, was the end of Civil War #2. If you’re the only person in the world who hasn’t read the issue or didn’t have the end spoiled for you by Howard Stern or the New York Post or Yahoo, then I won’t spoil it for you here. Graeme McMillan talked about fan backlash, though, and Kevin talked about Marvel’s claims of sticking to their guns with the big change, which may contain a few spoilers.
