Pekar edits debut Best American Comics collection

ICv2.com reports that for the first time, Houghton Mifflin will publish a comics edition of its Best American Series, guest-edited by Harvey Pekar. Former Fantagraphics editor Anne Elizabeth Moore is series editor.

The Best American books, published since 1915, collect the best in fiction and nonfiction, including mystery writing, short stories, essays and travel writing.

The Best American Comics 2006, due out Oct. 11, will feature work by the likes of Jessica Abel, Lynda Barry, Alison Bechdel, Joe Sacco, Gilbert Shelton and Chris Ware.

The 320-page black and white paperback will retail for $22.

    Hmm, could be promising. These “best” collections are hit and miss but I do like that they’re giving comics some loving. The “Best Music” and “best Travel Writing” ones are usually pretty good. I’ll definitely check this one out.
