Taking Wonder Woman back to her roots

Wonder Woman #1

Apparently the new Batwoman isn’t the only superheroine the mainstream media are interested in. No, there’s also Wonder Woman, who’s undergone some changes of her own.

(Warning: If you haven’t read last week’s Wonder Woman #1, and want to be surprised, go no further.)

“It’s safe to say that Donna [Troy] is Wonder Woman throughout my run,” writer Allan Heinberg tells Scripps Howard News Service. That run is planned for at least five issues.

He notes the difficulties many writers have with Wonder Woman: “She has gone through a lot of changes in her history. A lot of creative teams come (onto the book) with the idea of fixing her.”

Heinberg also acknowledges the character’s role as a gay icon. However, “I didn’t have a specific gay agenda when I wrote the character. In going back to her roots … her heterosexuality was sort of the prime mover in the storytelling,” he said.
