He’s got soul, he’s got class, he’s got style, he’s badass.

If you’ve ever wished that Grant Morrison and Peter Milligan – when he’s good, as opposed to when he’s writing X-Men – could magically distill their essences into one human being who would be an artistic wizard, then your dreams came true a long time ago with Brendan McCarthy. Artist for 2000AD and Strange Days, designer of Morrison’s Doom Patrol and cover guru for the first couple of years of Milligan’s Shade the Changing Man, McCarthy’s been absent from the comic scene for years now, spending his time fighting orc hordes and making movies in sunny Los Angeles. But with the final issue of DC’s Solo series, he’s back! Back! BACK! But let him explain what to expect:

“The cover contains allusions to images and characters on display in Solo #12, the final issue. As you can see I’m going through my “GirlyMan” period. Must be living in California under the preposterous machismo of ‘The Governator’ that’s doing it. The guy on the front is ‘Duke’ Hussy. He’s a neo-shopper and he’s just bought the new ‘holed’ edition of The Lord of Nothing. Fasten your stocking suspenders, hold onto your lace hankies, because this issue features the debut of new art sensation DITRANKO, a new glam-punk take on THE FLASH and the first viewing of a ‘lost’ BATMAN tale from the 60′s. ”

In other words, expect something slightly different from the norm.

“new glam-punk take on THE FLASH”

That one line sold me. Not that I needed to be sold, I’ve loved the idea of Solo from the start and I’ll be sad to see it go.

    Make mine McCarthy!

    Nice Aguillera reference. Well played.

Now … Ditranko. That should be awesome.
